Trey Herlitz-Ferguson
Founder & Lead Coach
The Founder's Story
Hi, I’m Trey.
I founded OFF THE COUCH because I’ve lived the struggle myself. For years, I was caught in addiction, battling my mental health, and stuck in patterns that left me feeling hopeless. I know what it’s like to be the young person who can’t get out of his own way. My turning point came when I was pushed out of my comfort zone and into the wilderness. Through hard lessons and uncomfortable growth, I learned the value of leaning into challenge instead of running from it.
After finding my own recovery, I spent over seven years working in the field, and I now have more than eight years sober. I’ve worked in top treatment and coaching programs across Utah and Los Angeles. I ran group homes, supported transitional living, and collaborated with clinicians. I saw what worked, and I saw what didn’t. Off The Couch is the culmination of those lessons: blending lived experience with professional training to create structure and accountability for both the client and the family.
I named this company "Off The Couch" because I’ve seen how real change happens. It doesn't happen by sitting still. It happens through action. The couch has become a symbol of being stuck in addiction, depression, or the paralysis of "failure to launch." Our philosophy is simple: get into solution, choose action over avoidance, and create momentum. Whether it's on a trail, in the ocean, or just showing up for life, we prove to young people that change is possible when you step into movement.
Our Philosophy
We believe in a "whole-person" approach that integrates the family system, physical health, and mental well-being.
Lived Experience
We've been there. We know the lies, the fears, and the struggles because we lived them. This allows us to build trust faster than traditional clinicians.
Movement as Medicine
Depression and anxiety thrive in stagnation. We use hiking, surfing, training, and adventure to break physical and mental patterns.
Family Systems
A young adult doesn't heal in a vacuum. We work closely with parents to establish boundaries, communication, and a healthy home environment.
